When It Just Clicks — HTB Very Easy Machines Revisited

I’m back HTB

About a year and a half ago, these machines humbled me.

I remember spending significant time on each one — not because the vulnerabilities are complex, but because I didn’t have the mental model to read what the machine was telling me. Every step required looking something up. Every tool felt unfamiliar.

Today I ran through five Very Easy machines in one sitting. No walkthroughs, minimal friction, no asking the AI for help.

The machines

What actually changed

Not talent. Reps.

The past year has been PortSwigger Web Academy, building automation scripts from scratch, and developing a methodology instead of just following steps. When you understand why a payload works, the tooling becomes obvious.

The machines didn’t get easier. The gap between where I was and where they sit just closed.

What’s next

Continuing through the PortSwigger SQL Injection path — error-based is next — with a hard deadline of May 4th for the full path.

The benchmark that matters isn’t Very Easy machines. But clearing them without friction is a clean signal that the foundation is solid.
